Customizing BigCommerce Order Notifications

Order notifications and customer messages

Order notifications help you, the merchant, stay informed about new orders and customer concerns. A new-order email includes order details and a link to view the order in your store. An order-message notification identifies the customer and order so your team can find and respond to the conversation.

Keep these staff alerts separate from the confirmation and status-update emails sent to customers. They serve different purposes and have different settings.

Enable email notifications for your team

  1. In your BigCommerce control panel, open Settings → Order notifications.
  2. Select Email Message as a notification method and save the change.
  3. Open the Email Message settings and enter the business email addresses that should receive alerts. Separate multiple addresses with commas.
  4. Save your settings and use Test Notification Method to check delivery.

Use a monitored business inbox so a customer request is not left in an employee’s personal account. Check BigCommerce’s order-notification guidance for the available notification controls.

Here is an example of a merchant’s new-order notification:

Check what customers receive

Customer invoices and status updates are transactional emails. BigCommerce documents their template editor under Marketing → Transactional Emails. Use its transactional email documentation when changing customer-facing wording or layout.

Back up a template before editing it. Preserve its dynamic order data and links, preview the result, and test a representative order. Changing a recipient for staff notifications does not change the customer’s email address on an order.

Receive notifications on your phone

Use notifications from the email app connected to your business inbox. Check that alerts are enabled for that account and that your team has a clear process for urgent messages. Email-to-text gateway addresses from older carrier lists are not a dependable notification method.

Troubleshoot missing or duplicate emails

  • Confirm that the notification method is enabled and the recipient addresses are correct.
  • Run the test notification and check spam, quarantine, inbox rules, and any shared-mailbox forwarding.
  • Place a test order and test a customer message separately. A successful email test does not confirm every event in your workflow.
  • Review connected email and automation apps before enabling another sender for the same customer event.
  • Confirm the store’s sender details and email configuration using BigCommerce’s email configuration guide.

Connect notifications to your order workflow

An email alert tells you something happened; it does not fulfill an order or resolve a customer request. Use the order record to review payment, messages, shipment details, and refunds. Our BigCommerce order-management guide explains the related actions and statuses.
